For my beat I interview Derek Tingey, who is a member of the varsity cross country team. When I asked him how long he has wanted join the team? He said that he, ¨Didn’t originally want to join,¨ but that after seeing his brother and his friends have fun on the team he decided to. He has been a member of the team his entire tenure at West Hills and he said the friendships that develop while on the team motivates him to keep competing.
He stated that the hardest part about cross country was the endurance you have to have while going fast, but that he improves his endurance by practicing every day taking Sundays off. The varsity cross country team practices from 3-5 pm by doing various different workouts: long run, speed workouts, and ¨easy days.¨ Races are every Friday, so be sure to support your Wolfpack cross country team.

This week I decided to investigate the library even further. The library at West Hills High School is more than just checking books out for a good read or textbooks. We have computers that you can use freely to finish your essays or any projects that require research or typing. We also have library TA’s that help Mrs. Sannwald organize and keep everything intact. You can always print out your work as well, in case you don’t have a printer at home. Its free but if you want color you only have to pay 50 cents.
Behind Mrs. Sannwald’s desk/checkout area, you can see we have a tech repair room. Chromebooks are now taking over the use of paper in schools so we have to have an area where we can get them fixed if anything goes wrong. We also loan out chromebooks for those days you forget to put your computer in your backpack or forget to charge it and it dies in the middle of class. They no longer supply chromebook chargers, but if you’re lucky some of your teachers hold extras in their class. The library is also a pretty popular hangout spot for lunch when it’s too hot/cold outside. It’s also a great place to host clubs for example “Best Buddies” is held inside!

As any library would, the West Hills library carries a variety of content. All of the titles are by category and alphabetical order. With such a wide selection and organized system, the students benefit greatly from this material.
The range of material is very wide going from school textbooks and research books to magazines. Of course there is academic content in the school library, but there is also things just for fun. For example, there are fictional novels and magazines. This is especially handy because you don’t need to go to a city library. You also don’t need a library card! Not all schools have such a great library, so all students should take advantage and use it as much as possible.

Some pretty interesting things have been going on here at West hills. One thing that is happening this week, Winter Formal tickets are on sale! Yes! Sale! You better go get your discounted ticket before the price goes up! All you have to do is go to the finance office pay your small fee of $25. Then the price will just continue to raise. If you have any questions all you need to do is go to the library, counselors, front office, or even your teachers. They should know about this amazing deal. But make sure you act fast, because they are going to go fast. After this week the price will go up and you will have to pay full price. The dance is at The Rueben H. Fleet in Balboa Park on January 13th.

Wrestling season has recently started and this past week and on Saturday we had a tournament for both Junior Varsity and Varsity. Our boys and girls did an exceptional job especially Greg Roberts (170) and Justin Zingale (113).
This Thursday the team is hosting and inter-team scrimmage to help the new wrestlers know how a dual meet takes place. We invite friends and family to attend.
JV also has a dual meet this Saturday as well. Where we hope to have every wrestler wrestle and do exceptionally well.

For my beat this week, I will be asking varsity cross country athlete Derek Tingey about track preseason and what his plans and goals are going to be for this year’s track season. Here are the questions I asked him: What are your goals for this year’s track season? Are there are specific schools or people you want to beat? What are you going to do this preseason to prepare? The following paragraph will be his answers in respective order.
This track season I want to win our league meet for the mile and 800m. I want to make it to CIF finals. I also want to beat Grossmont during our duel in the mile and 800m and I want to beat Brady DeHaven in the mile at our league meet because he’s the top returner. During the preseason I’m going to do a lot of intense workouts and strengthening so that I’ll be strong enough to win.

Last week there were many sporting events. Many of them came with thrill and suspense; however, the Wolf Pack prevailed over most. There was girls soccer, boys soccer, and girls water polo. In girls soccer they have been doing very well. There were two girls soccer games last week and they were both hard fought victories. In boys soccer they have been putting up a good fight winning their only game of the week with ease. Lastly, is the girls water polo team which played two games last week. They won one of their games and they lost the other one. All in all it has been a good week for West Hills sports teams.
